Sweat™ is proud to introduce a new blog series to our followers, titled "Sweat On The Sidelines". We have tapped into our incredible network of hard working women in Sports Broadcasting, and are bringing you exclusive interviews to learn more about them and their journey. These women are crushing their TV gigs, embracing the Sweat™ lifestyle and, of course, rocking all the Sweat™ products as they do it.
This month’s feature is a woman who does it all. Katie Witham is living proof that you don't ever have to choose between family and career. While prioritizing her role as a daughter, sister, wife and mother, she continues to excel as a sports broadcaster!
Where are you from?
I grew up in a small town called Alliance, Ohio but have moved around a bit over the past decade spending time in Columbus, Ohio, Cleveland, Ohio, Upstate New York and now I'm back in Columbus, and have lived here for almost 3 years.
Tell Us a Little About Yourself!
Why does this always feel like the toughest question!? Well, I'm a wife and a new Mom. A sister, a daughter and a sports broadcaster. My biggest loves in life are family, sports, sweating and animals. I volunteer weekly at a local no-kill animal shelter and it's one of the best things I've ever done. I think I get more out of it than the animals do.
Where can we watch or find you on TV?
You can find me pitch side every weekend for our national MLS game of the week on FS1 and FOX.
How did you get into the TV industry?
My Mom had me in any activity you could find when I was younger. Whether it was on a sports field, or in dance and singing classes, I was a kid that needed to be in motion. I always looked up to my singing teacher, Stefani Schaefer, who is a morning news anchor for FOX 8 in Cleveland. I remember thinking - "I want to be exactly like Sissy when I grow up." I got my BA in Broadcast Journalism and Communications from Capital University where I also captained the women's soccer team. It was playing soccer that put me into the sports industry, but I worked hard and ultimately turned my first few internships in both radio and TV into jobs!
What is your proudest life moment?
Becoming a mother AND continuing to work in the sports broadcast industry! I held off on starting my family for a very long time due to the fear of having to choose one or the other. Well, I was wrong. You don't have to choose. It won't be easy but you can do it all! Everyone was incredibly supportive and I had so many other women working in sports reach out! Just this year there are quite a few new Moms working on the national scene which is so cool. We are making it the new normal!
What is the biggest life lesson that playing sports has taught you?
Never give up. No matter how many times someone tells you no or that you can't do it - if you really love it, believe in yourself, and work hard - then you can achieve it. Also, the importance and value of being a good teammate, on the field and in life.
What's your favorite workout?
What does your "Daily Sweat" mean to you?
Self-care! Me time! As a new Mom it's so hard to find time for myself, but I've learned the hard way that carving out an hour a few times a week (at least) is necessary for me both mentally and physically - and it makes me a better Mom. I may not want to get up and go - but I'm always happy at the end of a great workout.
Why do you think it's important to make time for your "Daily Sweat"?
As women we often are always taking care of everyone else. Making time for a daily sweat is important because it forces you to stop and take care of yourself - even for just a few minutes. Plus, I always feel more confident after working out. Win, win!
What is your go-to post workout snack or meal?
The greenest green juice I can find. Then I chug it!
What is your favorite Sweat product and why?
The "Gleam On" Illuminator SPF! I CANNOT live without it. Working outside I need a good SPF and traveling every weekend I need one that TSA approved! The mineral powder base was also perfect for my newborn son so he could come to the game with me (not to mention he loved playing with the brush!) I have four - one in every bag. I also love the Foundation because it's so easy to apply on the go and I just ordered the new mineral blush!
What is the best advice you would give your 20 year-old self?
Everything is just a season. Keep on keepin' on because no matter where you are in life it's going to change soon. And don't forget to turn around and help the next woman along.
What exciting moments are coming up for you?
My son's 1st birthday and the 2020 MLS season! We kick off at the end of February and I can't wait! Make sure to tune in every Sunday on FS1.
